CIGAR BOX GUITARS / CBGS

HOLY SMOKE

The thematic idea behind this instrumental artwork is History. The idea came about from a Landscape Architecture paper called Design of Cities I was taking at university.

The lectures taught about the creation of cities such as Athens, London and Paris, and how those cities started out as a collection of small tribes in and around the area and over time, evolved into the major developments that we see today.

The lectures told me that cities were live entities that expand and contract, and over the centuries these cities had grown and been sacked.

Each year that these cities remained in existence, added one more layer of history onto the name and character of the place.

I had visited many of the cities that were being discussed in the lectures and knew some of them extremely well, but when the history of those cities were revealed to me, I saw them in a new light and appreciated these cities even more than when I was actually walking around them, because I now felt more involved in their history.

A lot of the cities I studied had a holy theme common to them all and I decided to carve one of the more popular crosses to be used in Europe the early Celtic cross in the headstock.

I wondered that if we were to understand the history of our earth and the environmental impact we are having on its well being now, we might change our wasteful and ignorant opinion of “man having dominion and reign over all the earth,” into a more collaborative, interactive effort to stabilize and bring about a higher level of awareness than what has taken place in the past.
