The idea behind ‘Doctor Seuss Meets the Inca Trail’ came from a meditation I once had regarding the interrelationship between love, humour and hardship.
I once gave a poetry tutorial in which I asked a very youthful class to give me the ingredients that make up love. The result was indeed very humorous and varied, but no one included hardship as an ingredient.
When I travelled the Inca Trail in Peru many years ago, I learnt that the three ingredients, love humour and hardship were intrinsically linked.
The journey was extremely hard. The people I travelled with made the journey very humorous as we wondered if Dr Seuss had invented the crazy curves and steps that made up the trail. The overall experience provided me with a lasting memory of love.
In this artwork love is represented by the Romeo and Juliet cigar box, humour is represented by the single string Diddley Bow and hardship is reflected in the Dr Seuss Inca steps carved into the headstock design.
